The Sydney Gateway is a major infrastructure project supporting Sydney Airport and Port Botany and as such presents an opportunity to greatly improve active transport around north/north-west Botany Bay. Key stakeholders include RMS, ARTC, SACL, NSW Ports and Local Councils (Bayside, Inner West, City of Sydney) as well as other landholders such as Sydney Water. As yet ARTC have not been receptive to sharing any of the goods corridor and corporations such as SACL and NSW Ports, though espousing ‘sustainable’ practices and commitment to Sydney Cycling Futures, are not in a position to lead in this area. Sydney Cycling Futures, endorsed by then Transport Minister Gladys Berejiklian, identified Sydney Airport and Port Botany as key commuting destinations. Although there has not been a coordinated response to active transport to date with the right ministerial leadership this project could change that. It is critical to make your voice heard and emphasise that active transport is not in competition but complementary to freight and other major infrastructure initiatives. Well designed active transport assists in reducing pressure on key transport arteries. It increases productivity and research supports the individual, social and economic benefits.
